Pointe Blank

A couple weeks ago I was involved in the Pointe Blank exhibition, held by the Birmingham Royal Ballet, and curated by Claire Hartley and Rob Lindsay. In their own words, the exhibition was:

“A collection of original images inspired by the story of Coppélia. In a first-of-its-kind collaborative project for Birmingham Royal Ballet, 27 artists and designers have been invited to produce individual pieces of artwork based upon the tale of toymaker Doctor Coppélius, and his attempts to breathe life into his most prized creation.”

My design is focused on my interpretation of the doll Coppelia, being a hypnotic figure in the story, bringing those around her under her spell. I tried to symbolise this using cogs and gears in the background and to make up here eyes. She isn’t the main character in the story, but everything does revolve around her. So I characterised this with the two character side profiles either side of her, one with love & desire in his eyes, and the other with envy & jealousy.

Overall though, I thoroughly enjoyed being part of Pointe Blank and would love to do more of this sort of thing. Also, congratulations to Claire and Rob for curating a brilliantly organised, and displayed exhibition, with a great variety and selection of artists. I was honoured to be part of it, and have my work displayed next to other brilliant designers, illustrators and artists.

While all the submissions were unique, creative and beautiful, some of my personal favourites are below.
